The first & second Adam

Father God, thank you for this is the day that You have made and we shall be glad and rejoice in it. We ask that You give us knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and open up the eyes of our understanding as we read and share the Word in the name of Jesus, Amen.

1 Corinthians 15:45 (NKJV)

"And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit."

Amen, thank you LORD.

The first Adam that is referred to in the above context is the first man that was made by God. The last Adam that is a life-giving spirit is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. They are similarities between the first Adam and last Adam. The first Adam had the power to name just like the second Adam also has the power to name or change a person's name. The last person we see Adam name before they depart from the garden of Eden was his wife. He named her 'Eve' which means mother of the living (Genesis 3:20). The Second Adam not only gives a new name to God's people, but He also gives a new identity (2 Corinthians 5:17) to all who receive salvation for we become sons and daughters of God. In 1 John 3:1, Apostle John shares, that we who have received Christ are now children of God.

In addition, all who receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of their life receive life where by death no longer has a hold on them because He is the giver of life. The first death that Jesus, the Second Adam, dealt with was spiritual death which come as a result of sin that was introduced by the enemy to Adam and Eve while they were still in the garden of Eden. God had instructed Adam and Eve to eat from every tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil for God had warned them that in the day that they eat of it, they shall surely die (Genesis 2:17). However, the serpent deceived Eve (Genesis 3:13) and they both ate of the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:4-7) which introduced sin into the world. Sin then led to spiritual death.

Sin broke the direct fellowship that God had with man.

At the same time, they are also differences between the first and second Adam. The first Adam was created in the image of God. This image of God also includes the second Adam who is the Son of God. When God was creating the world, He decided to make man in His image. Genesis 1:26 (NKJV), "Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to our likeness' let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." The 'Us' in the above Word refers to God, the Father, God, the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The second Adam, Jesus, is the Son of God who pleased God so much that God made Him God as seen in Hebrews 1:9. The Word of God says, "You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions."

The first Adam was formed from dust. That is, Genesis 2:7 (NKJV) says, "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being."

While on the other hand, the second Adam is born of the spirit. When an angel of the LORD came to deliver the good news to Mary, the mother of Jesus. She asked how she would conceive a child without knowing a man (Luke 1:34) and the angel responded, "...The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35 NKJV). According to God's heart and divine purposes, Mary had to have a supernatural birth because all of God's children who would receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, are born of the spirit. Jesus said in John 3:16 (NKJV), "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."

Before becoming born again, we are all living beings just like the first Adam who God created but was later corrupted by sin. To be corrupted by sin means everyone who was born after Adam and Eve left the garden of Eden is born with sin which is the reason all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). As seen above, sin broke direct fellowship between man and God. The second Adam, Jesus Christ, on the other hand came to restore this relationship between God and man according to God's original purpose when He made man from the beginning. Since, Jesus was born of the incorruptible seed and while He was living here on the earth, He was kept by the power of God. Acts 2:27 (NKJV) says, "For You will not leave my soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." When you receive Jesus, this promise also becomes yours because you are born of God (John 1:13) and of the incorruptible seed just like Jesus. It also means You are kept by the power of God and God will not allow you to see the corruption of sin as you yield to the power of the Holy Spirit working in you as His child.

I'll end with this Word found in 1 John 4:4 (NKJV)

"You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than He who is in the world."

I repent of my past sins and enter the Kingdom of light where I choose relationship with Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour and with God as my loving Father today and forever." AMEN.
